Versions of Edvard Munch's The Scream: Two paintings, respectively with tempera and oil on unprimed cardboard, probably from 1910, and pastel version from 1893 and two lithographs from 1895, the one to the left is the hand-colored version. Painted in 1893, Munch’s iconic Scream was donated to the National Gallery in 1910. In terms of its fame, this painting now rivals works such as Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa (1503) and Van Gogh’s Sunflowers (1888). Few artworks have inspired filmmakers, cartoonists and other artists to the extent that The Scream has done.

The two oil paintings are the best known and now reside in National Gallery of Norway and the Munch Museum. There were also two pastels produced. Even so, it was only after Munch’s death in 1944 that the popularity of the image really took off.

The screaming figure personifies existential horror. A precursor of this image is a drawing of a man (Munch himself) on a similar bridge, with a blood-red sky above.
